Last Tuesday my Roomba arrived. After years of mumbling about how nifty they are and how I should get one, [livejournal.com profile] larksdream pointed out to me a special deal on the net, so I ordered, and now I have one. My house is already several small scoops full of dust cleaner. In my abundant faith in technology, I immediately programmed my roomba to run at 11am twice a week while I'm away at work. I have so far come home to find it: caught in stereo wires (now tied up neatly), stuck on a rug (no fix there yet), and high-centered sideways on a threshold between two rooms. Someday, my hair will be the death of it. So far every second or third cleaning I need to cut my hair out of its rollers. I still think it's better than sweeping.
Today I got a new iPhone 3gs to replace my 2+ year old original iPhone. The faster processor does make UI things snappier, and the gps and compass are neat, and it's 32GB vs the old 8GB, but mostly the new iPhone is the same as the old iPhone.

does that mean you have an old iPhone just lying around? because I finally figured a way out of my Verizon contract and was about to buy one. I kind of want the video feature and the compass, but I don't know if I want them $200 worth...

kinda. the old one is in bad shape after two years going everywhere with me in my pocket. there are a couple dents in the case and the glass is cracked in one corner (not on the screen) and I covered that up with a glob of epoxy. recently it was getting flaky about working as a phone, imagining that headphones were plugged in when they weren't causing it to not make any sound and not accept any speech. i think my old phone is more likely to wind up some hacker's toy than someone's useful phone.

We've considered getting a roomba, but we have 3 cats. Just about everything it has to pick up is hair.

So Roomba has you trained now? :) You may need to use a lighthouse on that threshold - it will force Roomba to go over it straight and decrease the likelihood it'll get stuck there.

I just got a new cleaning head for mine, after 2 years. The hair unfortunately does eventually get into the gearboxes, although pet hair is much worse than people hair. It'll last a long time if you take the time to clean it regularly.
