I bundled up and biked at 14F just fine a week ago. This week the slush and ice came and I was just not in the mood to prove myself any further. Aside from the slush and ice, I'm also less enjoying the extra time spent bundling and unbundling specially for biking. I think it takes a bit longer than just what's needed for walking. Hmpf. On the plus side, my bike always goes exactly where I want, when I want, while busses and subways don't. To work and back, however, do just fine by red line.

A couple of days ago even WALKING was a hideous icy death-trap, so I am rather glad you didn't try to "prove yourself" on wheels. :)

Amazingly it's been snowing in Boise, so I havne't biked in a month. I was hoping someone of the crazies would try biking and snow and share some tips, but I haven't done it since CMU and I only had to go a mile. :-)

Back in grad school in Laramie WY, we decided that icy roads and bicycles were not compatible. If you lost traction on the ice and got off balance the slightest bit, you were immediately hard on the ground. Bikes and compressible snow were an okay combination.

The bike shops around here sell carbide-studded snow tires for $55-$90 each (you need two.) perhaps you could find for cheaper on the internetz?
apparently they work fine over sheets of ice and in the summer, too.
