I endorse this software to download all your lj (requires Python). They wrote the 1180 lines of code so that I didn't have to. Open Source works. Thanks [livejournal.com profile] mzrowan

Tell us more about this! I've been passively hunting for something like this for years... Does it divide entries into individual files? Does it slurp pics too? Is it printable quality?

It does not seem to also download pictures, but it shouldn't be hard to add that based on the files it does give you.

It downloads to a series of dirs entry00000 containing entry.xml and comments.xml
It also reassembles these into pages of basic HTML elsewhere. It downloads copies of your icons but not other peoples.

I'm unable to follow the instructions to make it work. Plus, they look scary well past the point where they lost me.

There are a few ways to back up an LJ. I've had a different one in place for years which is probably Windows-only.

However, none of the ones I know of can slurp comments... can this one? If so, I'll try it.

It does slurp comments, in a somewhat imperfect format. It loses people's userpics. That's the big drawback I've noticed.
