In which I go to the office party, and get dragged into hijinks with the non-geek half of the office.
There was one woman who very badly needed to party very hard with as much drinking and dancing as she could manage.
There were several gaggles of socialites moving in circles I could not comprehend. They had conversations about things I had no context for, seemed to have intentions and motives alien to me, and I think I am content to leave them over there in that world.
And then there was the after-party down the street at a venue known as "middlesex". I had walked past this place at other times and seen lines to get in and glimpses of an inside that seemed much to posh for me. On other nights that might have been true but on this night I had on my suit (office party mandated "semi-formal" dress code) so I was dressed well enough and it was just a matter of getting over the attitude. Dragged inside by my somewhat overlubricated and very friendly coworker I discovered that I could stop worrying and learn to love the thump-thump music. My times at the free-form hippy electro-world dance back in Santa Barbara served me well and I was able to adapt and pass in the club-thump-thump atmosphere. Their social structures and concerns mattered not, dancing I understood. Well, sorta. It was still a haphazard half drunken process (I'd only had one glass of wine at the work party, and one at the second venue, most of the people around me had significantly more) and there was bumping and fooling around and sloshing of drinks all over.
In short, I had a fun night, different than other nights. Dunno how often I'll get back to that world. Probably not too often.
