On the one hand, there's my comfort zone of 'how many people there will I know'
On the other, I've not yet lived in Boston 6 months, don't know that many people and ought to get out to meet more

Go out and meet people. You never know what will happen.

Which party are you talking about?

so the parties i can think of will all have some people you know and lots you don't. some of the unknown people will be ones you'll love getting to know. you don't have to stay anywhere all night. people party hop, and you live in a pretty central location.

My ideal solution to these things is: go, and bring something to do with my hands (like chainmail). This means a) I am not sitting around feeling fidgety and awkward, b) I have something to entertain me even when not in conversation, and c) I have a ready-made conversation starter.

Of course, I rarely actually do it, and don't know what else to suggest, but it seems like a good idea.

You could do both parties. Many people will be party-hopping that night.
