A time to create, time to be, a time to consume
After having a very busily productive and creative couple weeks (though sadly not on nanowrimo) on Saturday I ran out. There was nothing left I wanted to create. What was left was something I wanted to be. I wanted to be a better person, in better shape, more thoughtful. So, I ate good food and watched misc informative and silly TV and did little bits of stretching and yoga and weight lifting throughout the day.
Today started out much the same. Eventually I got out of the hose and investigated the Somerville YMCA and the Davis Sq BSC as venues for my fitness development (their prices and philosophies vary substantially, and their convenience of location, and I’m not sure what mix of those I want). Then feeling a bit back in the creative mood I went with laptop in backpack to Diesel and True Grounds but was thwarted. Instead of going home to mope I kept walking around on more errands checking out cold weather gear at the bike shop (ace wheel works, good glove selection but nothing satisfactory for face) and hardware at Tag’s.
Some happy serendipity happened next when I was in Porter Sq, noted the date, popped in to the book store there and indeed the latest (and supposedly last) installment of Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth series was out and there was a spot at their cafe where I could settle in and read it for a couple hours. I needed that. It’s good to fill up again with someone’s world of ideas and enjoy the artistry and have a good think about it.
Also, I’m writing this in Pages’08 and I’d just like to say that the page flow is nice. It does smart things when a line paragraph is just barely crossing a page to make both pages come out better. This typography nerd is satisfied. I may not go back to LaTeX (unless I really need the equations or bibtex or something).

If NaNoWriMo is a marathon, it looks like I can just about run a mile.
In other words, this should properly be done with training and practice leading up to the big event.
Maybe if I write a few 5000 word short stories, maybe even a couple longer ones, I’ll be in better shape for next year.

Also, I think I give up on NaNoWriMo since I had too little of what was supposed to be the main project, and I just wrote 1300 words on a different story, because that was the story I needed to write tonight.
