bolsonSince Sunday I've been putting in a couple hours a day installing software and copying data so that I can have a server for my web sites that doesn't go away for the month I'll be in transition soon. Since some time in college I've been serving web and email and other things from my own computer, on all the time in my dorm room or apartment. On the plus side, virtually unlimited storage and total control. On the down side, heat and noise and being on the slow side of some connection out to the internet.
Apache. Java. Tomcat. Postgresql. Postfix. Dspam. Subversion. pine.
and about 2 GB of data in various places and formats.
and I'm just about ready to throw the switch, but some things I won't know if they really work until I go through with changing the DNS and pointing my domain names at the new server. That's a bit nervous making, but it needs to be done, and I'll probably be able to get things up in reasonable order if any bugs show up.
This is the $90/mo dedicated server hosting plan I was musing about some time ago, and if anyone wants to buy in for some fraction of the 144GB of disk still available I'd be interested to hear it.
