Thursday night, old friend from 7th grade on, Genevieve, comes up to SB. Saw Minority Report, good, I think. Good while watching, minimal after effect. Friday morning we drove to Las Vegas for DefCon 10 (or 'X' or '0A', depending on your preferred numbering system). My car's "Check Engine" light only came on a couple times near the Nevada border. I think I'm going to have to get used to living with an increasingly piece of shit car over the next few years. Got there in time for the last two sessions of the day, they had started at 11am, which we could have made if we left at 5am, but we left around 9. oops. Decent dinner. Back to the conference area to hang out with all the other hacker types there. Gen spent much of the night trying to get her linux laptop working on the network there. The network was a bit flakey, my Mac was partially working on the net since around 4pm, but I got it stabilized that night and didn't have any problems after that. Random milling about and trying to be social with other people who also aren't terribly good at it is often futile. There were lots of little lecture-workshops to go to. About half of them sucked and didn't have anything either useful or entertaining to say. I'd like to say there were lots of really good hackers there, but unfortunately that doesn't include all the lecturers. Friday night was good. It was definitely a party night and I got dressed up for it. Black dress shoes and socks. Black shorts. White shirt. Dark Escher tie. And most of all, the hooded black bath robe. I was complimented on it a couple times, most satisfyingly by the girl I proceded to flirt with for the next hour. There are nice hacker chicks out there! At UC Davis, appearantly. Then, at about 2am sunday morning, Gen got her networking functional. After checking her email and such, she insisted that I escort her back to the hotel room. I would post a picture of the sexy vinyl she was wearing, but I think she'd object. Anyhow, I left nice hacker davis girl with my email address and haven't heard from her since. Even with my escort, Gen got a couple random driveby hoots. Better, I suppose, than the 5+ she said she got on the way between hotel and confrence. Drive back sucked. 7.5 hours in hot nevada/california desert afternoon. And with engine weakness, no AC up hills. Got home fine eventually, and so ends my trip to defcon x.Thu Aug 8 01:39:14 PDT 2002
